Description A cast iron maple sap spile with a heavy wire hook. The spile has a one-piece casted trough and insertion end. Affixed is a bent wire hanging hook (for the top edge hole of a metal sap bucket). The insertion end has two elliptical voids. The tip of the trough is slightly-rounded. There is no maker's mark cast. There is a similarly-shaped spile, captioned as a "sap spout", illustrated in a 1906 hardware catalogue (1906 Wood, Vallance & Co., p. 427).

Provenance Previously owned by Mrs. Thomas Young (nee Jessie Ferguson?) She resided in Sydenham Township, Grey County, Ontario. Similar-looking items were manufactured in Guelph circa 1916 by the Taylor-Forbes foundry, but the manufacturer is not marked on this piece.
