Description Hand-cranked coffee mill and its pull-out drawer (a&b). The wood originally had a dark brown finish (now worn). The round, funnel-like hopper at the top is bolted to the wooden base. The base has a nailed construction (7 nails present at the left, 5 at the right). The curved metal crank handle has a black-finished wooden grip. No maker's identification is present. Underneath the hopper is a series of slanted teeth. The wooden drawer, "B", has a metal pull knob.
Provenance The age and origin of this coffee mill are not known. The previous owner, Mrs. Temple Day, resided near Annan, in Sydenham Township, Grey County. It might be a 19th-century item.

Function This is a household-sized grinder. Coffee beans would be added to the hopper at the top and then the hand crank would be turned to grind them. The grindings would collect below in the drawer, which could be withdrawn and dumped as needed.
