Description Log cabin pattern pieced quilt (started before 1898 by Minnie McKay). It is pieced from small rectangles of fabric, which are pieced to form squares. There are ten squares, half of them made from dark-coloured fabrics, and half of them light-coloured, to create the particular pattern of this log cabin variation. In the center of each square is a small red one. This is the traditional colour for the center of a log cabin square, usually representing the "hearth" of the log cabin. As a result of the placement of the squares, there are eight dark diamonds and 15 light-coloured diamonds.
Around the perimeter, there is a black stripe 3.5 cm wide, then a maroon-coloured one, then a black one. There is a rust-coloured velvet border/binding (2 cm wide) around the edges. The fabrics used in the squares are cotton, wool, velvet and silk. On the reverse side, there are blocks of maroon and black. The center block is maroon, and embroidered in floral patterns in a darker thread. There is no date or maker's name on the piece. 160 cm x 106 cm. 60 blocks in total (6 across, 10 down)
