Description Novelty music box-style photograph album, and its winding key. Cylinder type music box. The album area is leather-bound, with gilt-edged pages. The front has a carved design and some gold-coloured markings. There are eleven pages, and a fly page. Each page has a compartment or compartments for photographs. The fronts of the pages are printed with colourful floral and bird decorations predominately in shades of green and rose. The back half of the book is a case for the music box. The music box has a 6 cm-long cylinder. The machine is activated by pulling the brass wire which is protruding from the side of the case. The album has an engraved-looking brass closure. A brass key for winding the machine is usually attached to the outer side of the back cover. The right side of the album has a fancy engraved brass clasp, that catches over a brass protrusion on a brass plate. The key has an impressed maker's mark "MADE IN ENGLAND / POPULAR / PROGRESS" (with a spade-shaped logo as well). If you look at the underside of the album, you can see a brass-rimmed socket. This is the winding area for the key.
Makers mark The key has an impressed maker's mark "MADE IN ENGLAND / POPULAR / PROGRESS" (with a spade-shaped logo as well)
