Object Name Carriage, Doll
Title Novelty Lead Baby Carriage Miniature (1893 patent)
Lexicon category 9: Recreational Artifacts
Date 1893+
Artist Unidentified manufacturer
Made Unknown
Place of Origin Unknown
Description Diminuitive, all-lead, doll carriage toy, 1890s. The sides are thin, openwork lead (somewhat delicate and prone to mis-shaping due to its bendability). No maker's identification is present, but there is a patent date of May 9, 1893. There are four spoked wheels. A plain, horizontal rod acts as the handle. There is a socket near the handle, which suggests that there might have once been a "sunshade" (parasol) part? The interior of the carriage has a slat-like appearance. There is no upholstery or mattress as would be present in a real carriage. The undercarriage has a patent date embossed: "PAT. MAY 9, 1893". The sides and ends of the carriage have a filagree-style design. It is plain on the inside, but the exterior sides are textured (looks like knurling).
