Description Pinewood four-armed swift with mushroom-like knob at the top. This item was No. 88 in the Kirk inventory. Mrs. Kirk called it a "Pedestal four-arm swift". Center post with two fixed arms and two adjustable arms. It would have made an 186 cm maximum skein size. There is a mushroom-like wooden knob at the top. There is no maker's name observed, nor any dating or lettering. Overall height is 86 cm. Rough piece is thick (7 cm) and 37 cm x 36 cm.
Provenance This item was listed on Mrs. Kirk's July, 1980 inventory list at Owen Sound, Ontario, as a "Pedestal 4-arm swift". She did not record how old it was, or where she obtained it. The Kirks sometimes purchased items for their collection from Ontario antique shops. Dorothy W. Kirk (nee Budge) was born in 1911 at Owen Sound, and spent some of her married years in Toronto, where her husband, Harry J. Kirk worked. The Kirks later moved back to the Owen Sound area in the mid-1960s. Mrs. Kirk died in November of 2003.
