This ring was found in Owen Sound, Ontario, where Martha J. Urquhart once resided. It was found amidst her estate items (1939). Mrs. Urquhart had some items that pertained to the 19th-century Paterson family. Martha was listed as the widow of Donald P. Urquhart in the 1932 Vernon's directory of Owen Sound.
Born in Owen Sound, she was Martha Jacobina Paterson before her marriage to Mr. Urquhart in 1881. Her mother, Anne Jane Paterson (nee Foster), died in 1886.
The item last belonged (after 1939) to Margaret Melbourne Carrie (The original ownership of this item is unknown. It was found among the Estate items of Martha Jacobina Urquhart (née Paterson) of Owen Sound, who died in 1939. The locket would very likely have belonged to a woman of the Robert & Anne Jane Paterson (née Foster) or Urquhart families of Owen Sound before Martha acquired it. After 1939, it was last kept by Margaret Melbourne Carrie (née Kilbourn) of Owen Sound, whose mother had been a Margaret A. Paterson before she married George Stirk Kilbourn. Perhaps Martha and Margaret were sisters?
Victorians had a fad of re-using coinage by erasing it and making it into jewellery pieces. The coin that was used for this ring was formerly a Victorian coin as it has Queen Victoria on it. She died in 1901. She ascended the throne in 1837.
