Description Crazy quilt with a red flounce, as well as woven ribbon badges (American and Canadian) sewn into the pattern. This patchwork quilt is mainly made of silk and velvet patches. Various hand-embroidered stitches are used to decoratively border the patches. Several ribbon badges have been used as patches. One of them is a Judge's badge (North Grey Agricultural Society). One has "Exhibitor". There is an 1898 Southampton Queen Victoria Day celebration badge, an 1892 Exhibitor A.M.A. Detroit badge, an 1886 Owen Sound Lacrosse Club badge, a Michigan State Medical Society (Lansing, Mich.) dated May, 1887, and another medical association badge (from Mississippi). There is a ten-inch velvet border across each edge of the lining, while the remainder of the lining is a brownish striped fabric. There is a one-and-a-half inch red frill all around the quilt perimeter.
Provenance The personal history of this quilt is not known. It was donated to the Knox United Church in Owen Sound, Ontario in a bale, and the church women decided that it should be donated to the new Grey County museum in 1959. As there are three medical association badges on it, it suggests that the maker knew or was married to a medical doctor. The youngest badge on it dates from the 1898 Southampton Queen Victoria Day celebration (Bruce County, Ontario). It also has a North Grey Agricultural Society Judge's badge and an Owen Sound, Ontario lacrosse club badge (1886).
