Place of Origin Montreal, Quebec (for the coin)
Description This is a woman's gold brooch, that was made from a former Bank of Montreal token coin, in the late 19th-century. Erased and altered coinage was a popular Victorian jewellery fad. The circular coin's front side was erased and reworked into a monogram-style design with the initials "MPD" intertwined. The back has a hinged pinstem and a hook catch. Province of Canada, Bank of Montreal on the back. The back side of the brooch still has the token's illustration of a large building with pillars and "PROVINCE OF CANADA / BANK OF MONTREAL". Originally, this was a 20 dollar gold piece.
Makers mark original minted design is erased from the front
The back side of the brooch still has the token's illustration of a large building with pillars and "PROVINCE OF CANADA / BANK OF MONTREAL".
Provenance The precise age of this brooch is not known. It apparently was made from a former bank token from the Bank of Montreal, and therefore it would have pre-dated the issue of official Canadian coinage in the late 1850s, when it was used as a token. Monogrammed jewellery like this was popular c. 1860-1880s, so someone likely altered the old token sometime in that time period?
The brooch belonged to Mrs. Martha J. Urquhart of Owen Sound, Ontarioand found among her Estate items in 1939. Her maiden name was Martha Jacobina Paterson, and she was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Anne Jane Paterson / Patterson of Owen Sound, Canada West. Martha married Donald P. Urquhart in 1881. Her mother, Anne Paterson died in 1888, and the initials do not match hers. The "M" of the initials suggests that it first belonged to Martha? However, there is no "J". After 1939, the item was kept by Margaret Melbourne Carrie (nee Kilbourn), whose parents had been a Margaret A. Paterson and George Stirk Kilbourn of Owen Sound.
