Description RIDGWAYS tea tin, that is printed with patriotic images from World War I. This is a small rectangular tin with a flat, hinged lid. The underside of the lid marks it as a "War Souvenir" and has instructions for making the tea. The front is printed with three oncoming soldiers on horseback, with the man in the foreground brandishing a sword, inset with the bust portrait of an officer, "Field Marshal Sir John French", and bordered with hanging Union Jacks on either side. One side is printed with a boy in shorts and a wide-brimmed hat, some kind of Boy Scout, with two other Boy Scouts in the background around a firepit. They are bordered by the Union Jack on the left and what appears to be the flag of Romania on the right. The back of the tin is printed with a naval battle (the Battle of Jutland), a large warship against a much smaller boat which is pouring smoke, inset with the picture of another officer, "Admiral Sir John Jellicoe". This image is also bordered by flags; a Union Jack on the left and another indistinguishable flag on the right. The last side is the image of a Red Cross nurse (nursing sister) at a patient's bedside, with another nurse in the background. This image has a Union Jack on the left and a French flag (Belgian Flag?) on the right.
Provenance The tea tin commemorates the Great War (1914-1918, later called the First World War) and once had Ridgeways tea in it. The tin had belonged to Mrs. James Givens, who was formerly Miss Mary Ann "Minnie" McKay of Holland Township, Grey County. Minnie married James Givens in 1898, and they farmed in the Massie district for some time. The tin was later inherited by their daughter, Mrs. Jean (Givens) Reid, who lived in Owen Sound, Grey County.
