The hilt handle is brass with 15 thick ridges in its grip area. The hilt also has a curved, knob-ended tang. Opposite to the tang is a ring (function not known yet). Provenance |
The inscription on the underside of the blade suggests that the bayonet is French and dated January, 1875. Someone has suggested that perhaps it is a "Labelle". This may be a maker, or is it a placename or surname associated with this particular bayonet. Provenance unknown. Willed to the museum by Mildred J. Hubbert (neé Young) of Markdale, Grey County, who died in March,1997. Her maiden name was Mildred J. Young. She was married to George R. Hubbert who had a family connection to the Markdale area. They lived in Markdale in their later years, where Mrs. Hubbert was a local historian and writer. Formerly she was a teacher in the North. |
