Description |
Woman's fancy black satin front and felt-backed decorative indoor or light outdoor shawl or deep collar. There are no clasps or hooks and eyes, so it would have just rested on the wearer's shoulders. This shawl could have been worn for mourning and consists of pieces of satin fabric (felt backed) that have had voids cut out between them (proably using a pattern). The stitching on the back is probably machine done, while the stitching holding the front satin to the back felt has probably been done by hand and is visible from the front. |
Provenance |
This item was worn by Mrs. John McKay (the mother of Mrs. James Givens), who was the daughter of William and Isabella Murray, who owned the first post office and tailor shop at Murray's Corners (later called Arnott), in Holland Township, Grey County in the 1800s. Last belonged to Jean Reid (née Givens), 1900-1965. Her parents, James and Minnie Givens, married in 1898. The Givens family farmed in the Massie district of Holland Township, Grey County. Jean Reid later lived in Owen Sound, Grey County. She was married to William G. Reid who was descended from the Milson and Reid families of Grey County. James and Minnie Givens are buried at Greenwood Cemetery, in Owen Sound. Minnie McKay Givens (b. 1871-d.1950) Minnie's grandmother was Isabella Murray (Mrs. William Murray) of Murray's Corners (later called Arnott) in Holland Township. |
