Notes |
Miss Jean Armstrong grew up in Owen Sound, Grey County. Her family resided on the west side of town. A photograph (1955.011.002) shows the house on the hill that had been built by Joseph Maughan (Jean's grandfather). It was built between 1860-1862 and was originally a one-storey brick cottage. It was later purchased by Christopher Eaton and enlarged (he and Annie Eaton named it The Eagle's Nest). The Maughans were related to Mr. and Mrs. George and Jane Snider (she had been a Maughan). Jean's father, John Armstrong, was a lawyer, who had a partnership with W. P. Telford. Later on, Mr. Armstrong became a Crown Attorney. Jean's mother, Maria, a former teacher, was involved in many Owen Sound organizations. |
