Notes |
Gideon Carrie was born in Scotland, and emigrated sometime in the 1850s. Gideon Carrie married Scottish-born Miss Helen Reid of Sydenham Twp. on March 18, 1858. He was about 30 years old, and she was 18. Her father was George Reid, and her mother was Janet Grierson Reid. Her uncle, David Reid, lived at Bognor c. 1858. Gideon and Helen's son, James G. Carrie was born north of Leith, along the Lakeshore Road area on Feb. 14, 1859. When James (Jim) was about a year old, his parents moved to Toronto, as Gideon found work managing the Mather Farm there for a Toronto businessman (Mr. Mather). The family later returned to Grey County, settling at "Huntly Burn Farm", which was near Massie on the townline between Sydenham and Holland Townships. When they settled there, it was densely-forested, requiring a lot of effort to clear the land. The Carrie family farmed in Sydenham Township. When Jessie Carrie married John McQuaker in 1889, their marriage took place at Huntly Burn Farm. Gideon's son, another Gideon Carrie, moved to Saskatchewan later on, and resided at Leacross. Gideon's son James G. Carrie, was a farmer, teacher and creamery business worker at McQuaker & Co. at Owen Sound. In the 1901 census of Sydenham Twp., Gideon Carrie was 70 years old, Helen was 61, their son George was 30, and their daughter Violet was 28. Gideon died of pneumonia on April 19, 1906. Dr. Edmund Oldham of Chatsworth attended him before he passed away. Mr. Carrie died at Lot 3 1/2 1 Concession 6, Sydenham, according to his death record. Gideon's widow, Helen (Reid) Carrie, died on March 18, 1918, age 78, and was buried at McLean's Cemetery in Sydenham Twp. The Carrie farm was at Lot E1/2 16, Concession 1, according to Mrs. Carrie's death record. 1956.022.001-003 Items used by the Carrie family 1956.022.01-037 Textile items used by the Carrie family 1974.020.008 Photograph of the 1897 Bognor football team includes the younger Gideon Carrie 1997.049.003 Annie Traynor's autograph album, 1894 (Syd.
