Notes |
James Cruickshank lived in Keppel Township, Grey County. He was a farmer, and in the 1921 census, his son Robert and his wife Alice also resided with James and Margaret. James was 65 years old then, and Robert was 32. There is a story about the pioneer Mrs. James Cruickshank of Keppel. In 1862, she was called to the log cabin of a young couple, to assist with the birth of their child. While the father hurried off to find another neighbour woman to assist her as midwife, Mrs. Cruickshank kept the fireplace blazing well with cedar shavings as she had a great fear of bears in the area, and she was afraid that one could get into the cabin. In her nervousness, she accidentally dropped the key to the family's Scotch chest down in a crack in the floorboards of the cabin. As the baby's clothing was locked in the chest, she had to rip up her own flannel petticoat to provide something for the wee one to keep warm in. |
