Notes |
John Fletcher Sr. of the Gibraltar district of Collingwood Township, Grey County, purchased a fund-raising name quilt for 25 dollars in 1919, in support of the Knox Presbyterian Church. His family is buried at the Gibraltar cemeteries He passed away in 1944 at the age of 76. He came from a family of Scottish background. John was likely born in the Caledon area of Ontario in 1867 (his tombstone says 1868). His brother James Fletcher was born there in 1869. At a young age, he and his siblings were brought to Collingwood Township, Grey County by their Scottish parents, who had emigrated from Islay, Scotland. John's older sister, Flora, was reportedly four months old when the family had emigrated to Canada in 1864, but there may be a discrepancy in this story, as she was born in Scotland November 1, 1864. The Collingwood Township farm was cleared by his father James Fletcher. The family initially had a log house. In an 1890 Farmer's Directory, the following were listed in the Gibraltar district: Fletcher, Daniel, Concession 4, Lot 4 Fletcher, Duncan, Concession 4, Lot 5 Fletcher, Edward Concession 4, Lot 2 Fletcher, James Concession 4, Lot 2 Fletcher, John, Concession 5, Lot 5 In 1901, John and his brother Alex also were "Farmer's Sons" who farmed at Lot 2, Concession 5 with their parents with the younger James in the 1901 census. The 1901 census recorded the older James Fletcher as being born March 2, 1827, in Scotland and his wife Jane Fletcher was b. April 10, 1827. Their emigration year was recorded as 1864. Their son Alex was b. May 1, 1856 in Scotland. Their daughter Flora was born Nov. 1, 1864 in Scotland. Their son John was born July 28, 1867 (he was 33 years old in 1901). Their son James Fletcher was b. June 16, 1869. The family had a farm labourer, 15 year old William Brew to assist them in 1901. John's sister, Miss Flora Fletcher, kept house for him, until she passed away in 1925. They had four brothers and two sisters. The younger James Fletcher died in March, 1939, age 69. James had married Mina Mae Henderson and they had two daughters and two sons (Mrs. Ted Williams, Marie Fletcher (a nurse), Bruce Fletcher and Lloyd Fletcher). The burials at Knox Presbyterian Cemetery at Gibraltar include James Fletcher (d. March 9, 1917, age 90), Jane Fletcher (nee McKay, d. July 16, 1911, age 84), Flora Fletcher (d. Feb. 6, 1925, age 61), John Fletcher (d. Oct. 28, 1944, age 76), Edward T. Fletcher (d. Oct. 14, 1944, age 36), and the Alexander Fletcher family. There are also Fletcher burials at the Carmel Methodist cemetery at Gibraltar. There also was a Donald Fletcher at Gibraltar who started a blacksmith shop in the community prior to 1900. There also was a John A. Fletcher of Gibraltar, who died on July 30, 1909. He was a Farmer along the 4th Line of Collingwood Township. |
