Thomas Sutton Grant was the eldest of his family, and was born on Dec. 15, 1871. His brothers were Alexander and James, and they also had a sister, Jean, who was born at Owen Sound on Dec. 13, 1905. There is a photograph of the sons posed with their mother, Sophia Grant (nee Sutton). It is 1975.035.002 at the Grey County Archives. The Sutton family christening gown is in the Grey Roots Museum collection. Thomas' maternal grandfather was a Mr. Sutton, who worked at the Eaton Brewery in Owen Sound as a Brewmaster. Jean Reeve (nee Grant) mentioned in 1975 that her Sutton great-grandfather was a brother of William Sutton. William Sutton was originally from Hornecastle, and had married Catharine Brown Sunego at the Credit River mission in the Home District. William and Catharine (Nahneebahweequay) moved their family to the Owen Sound area in the 1840s. One of their daughters was also named Sophia. There is a photograph of William's mother in the Grey County Archives. Jean Reeve wrote: "Mr. Sutton and William Sutton were brothers; so Wm. Sutton & his wife Catherine were Uncle and Aunt to my grandmother and she told me of visiting them." |
