They were not the only sawmillers there at the time, the directory also listed the Mitchell Bros. sawmill, the R. Olmstead & Son sawmill, and the T. & R. Orr sawmill. In the 1891 census, Frank Hamilton was listed as 18 and he and his brother John (age 15) were still living at home with their parents and siblings. Hamilton Bros. was started in 1___. In the 1911 census, Frank Hamilton. Lumber Dealer, was listed as 37 years old (born May, 1874). Jack Hamilton was __ years old and working at __________. In May of 1912, John S. Hamilton purchased a property at Lot 32, Concession 2, SWTSR in Holland Township. When he was 38 years old, he was described as a "Lumber Merchant" on his marriage record. He married a teacher from Chatsworth named Mary Margaret Dowd (age 25). They were married on October 28, 1914, at St. Stanislaus Church, by a priest from Owen Sound, Patrick J. Shaughnessy. Mary Dowd's father, James Dowd, was a Cattle Dealer at Chatsworth, and her mother was Margaret Dowd (nee Godfrey). Archival Items: There is a 1918 group photograph at the Grey County Archives that shows the Holland Centre Baseball team, and it includes F. Hamilton, ___ Hamilton and "Fernie" Hamilton. Family History: The 1851 census of Canada West listed a number of Hamiltons from County Antrim, Ireland, who had settled in Holland Township. William Hamilton and his wife Mary Archibald Hamilton and his wife Ann John Hamilton (age 13) from County Antrim, born circa 1839 In the 1891 census of Holland Township, Patrick Hamilton (born Ireland) was 50 years of age. His wife Bridget was also born in Ireland and was 45. THE PATHS THAT LED TO HOLLAND (p.145) mentions that Patrick Hamilton was a surveyor before he settled at Holland Centre. He was a Justice of the Peace and served as a magistrate in the local area. There was a William Hamilton who started a sawmill about 1850 at Lot 36, Concession 2, NETSR. The Hamiltons eventually owned about one thousand acres in the area. The sawmill was a busy place, as each Hamilton with a farm had a bush, and other farmers brought their logs there as well. Adam Hillis bought the sawmill from the Hamiltons in 1953. Mr. Duggan took it over in 1954, the same year that the storm Hurricane Hazel tore out the dam. This destroyed the source of water power for the mill, so soon after it was torn down and some of it was used by a Mr. Phillips to make a shed. Some of the machinery was purchased by Mr. Hallman of Walter's Falls to use at his business. John S. Hamilton died in 1967 and was buried at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Cemetery just north of Chatsworth, Grey County. His wife, Mary Margaret Hamilton (nee Dowd) was born in 1889. Sadly, she died on October 25, 1918, at the age of 27. She had died of pneumonia as a result of being infected with the Spanish Influenza. Dr. Edmund Oldham of Chatsworth was her physician during her illness. There are a number of Hamiltons and Dowds buried at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. The land for the St. Stanislaus RC Church was donated by James Hamilton, and the church was built in 1864. |
