Charles B. M. Harris possibly worked as a Purser aboard the S. S. CARMONA in the 1890s. He also worked as a Steward on the CARMONA. Owen Sound was a busy port in the 1890s, with a lot of steamships calling there. He married his first wife, _____________ of Sydenham Township, Grey County, at Annan, on _________, 18__. Their son Jerry Harris was born in 1890. In the 1891 Census of Owen Sound, C. Harris, age 42, was listed as "Steward of Carmona". His spouse was Edith, age 26, and Jerry L. Harris was 1 years old. On Dec. 15, 1892, he married Edith Rice of Hamilton, Ontario at Hamilton in Wentworth County. He was then residing at Toronto, working as a "Boat Steward". He was listed as a Widower on the marriage record. Edith's parents were Joel Wesley Rice and Sarah Rice. She was born in Arran Township, Bruce County, in 1866. In the 1901 census, they resided at 97 Eliza Street in Owen Sound. They were a Baptist family. Their son Jerry was born August 7, 1890. Edith was born Sept. 23, 1864? Charles was recorded as born Feb. 29, 1848. In the 1902-1904 VERNON'S DIRECTORY OF OWEN SOUND, Charles was listed as "Chas. Harris", a "S.S. Steward" (steamship steward) at 97 Eliza St. After working as a sailor, Mr. Harris spent fifteen years working as a Caretaker at the Ryerson Public School in Owen Sound. In the 1911 census, he is recorded as a "Caretaker" and "at Public School". He was then 62 years old, Edith was 46, and Jerry was 20. Their house at 621 7th St. A. East was within walking distance of Ryerson School. Jerry was then working as a Salesman in a clothing store. Charles Harris is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Owen Sound. His gravestone says 1848-1919. His wife Edith Rice is also buried there, as well as Jerry Harris (1890-1919). Near them is Esther Harris (1873-1950) and her husband Alexander McBride.
