Notes |
The name of "James S. Lepard" is recorded on a 1916 name quilt that was produced by the Ebenezer Ladies' Aid group as a fundraiser during the First World War. This group was from the Concession 11 area of Euphrasia Township. The quilt is in the Grey Roots collection. Ebenezer was an early name for the Goring area. There was a Jim Lepard of Euphrasia who was only fifteen years old when his leg was injured in a fall from a horse. The leg became infected, and two doctors suggested that the leg should be amputated. His mother was a widow, with seven children to raise. Dr. Williams of Rocklyn agreed to operate to try and save the leg. The Lepard family's old kitchen table, in their little log house, was made ready for the operation. A neighbour lady, Mrs. Robert Mathers, and her daughter Elizabeth, came over to help the doctor during the operation. Fortunately, Jim's leg was saved. |
