Hugh McDonald, of Sullivan Township, Grey County, was one of the Canadians who served overseas in the South African War (Boer War). His regimental number was ____________ and he served with the ___________. A cylindrical ration tin that he had carried and later kept as a war souvenir, is now in the collection at Grey Roots. THE CHATSWORTH NEWS (Jan. 25, 1917, p. 1) reported: "Died. Mrs. A. McDonald received word last week that her son Pte. Hugh McDonald had been killed in action. Pte. McDonald was a veteran of the South African War and shortly after the beginning of the current struggle signed up with a Western Battalion." The newpaper in the same edition mentioned: "Desboro Item: Mrs. Arch. McDonald, Chatsworth has the sympathy of this community in her bereavement, by the death of her eldest son Pte. Hugh McDonald, which took place recently in France." |
