Notes |
Samuel Henry Nicholson was the second son of Charles Nicholson and Margaret Nicholson (nee McEwen), of Sullivan Township, Grey County (at RR#2 Chatsworth). The family was listed in the 1901 and 1911 censuses as farming. By 1917, Mrs. Margaret Nicholson was a widow. Sam Nicholson farmed as well, and in 1917 married a schoolteacher who originated from the Clifford area. Her name was Elizabeth C. Johnston (also known as Bessie). They farmed in the 1918-1921 time period on the 4th Concession of Sullivan Township, and then moved to a farm in Holland Township. The new farm was at the east side of Highway #6. It was 75 acres of mostly bush, with a lot of wild game such as cougars and black bears. Mr. Nicholson had a bear trap that he had purchased from Mr. Robert McElwain, a blacksmith at Williamsford. Sam's younger brother, Melville Stewart Nicholson, was a casualty of the First World War. Melville enlisted in 1917 and was killed on August 26, 1918, while serving with the 4th C.M.R. overseas. In the 1921 census, Sam and Bessie were at ______ Township. Their six children attended the ___________school. The Sam and Bessie Nicholson family left their farm in 1945 and moved to Palmerston, Ontario. Sam died later that year. Bessie passed away in December of 1980. |
