Dr. Leroy J. Sutherland was born in 1900 in Holland Township, Grey County, and attended high school in Owen Sound. He graduated in medicine from the University of Toronto in 1925 and served his internship in New Jersey, and at Norfolk, Virginia, before returning to Grey County to practice medicine in Desboro. He took two further years of training in internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (in Philadelphia), obtaining a Master of Science in Medicine degree in 1938. He practised in Owen Sound, Ontario. He served as a Medical Officer of Health in Sullivan Township and Owen Sound. He also worked at the General and Marine Hospital in Owen Sound. Circa 1956, he was the Chief in the Department of Medicine there. He died in April of 1984. Grey Roots Museum has a large collection of medical equipment that formerly belonged to Dr. Leroy J. Sutherland ("Roy Sutherland"), whose son said graduated from Philadelphia in the 1930s (c. 1934-1936) and practiced medicine at Owen Sound, Ontario. He also worked at the General & Marine Hospital at Owen Sound. In a 1956 General and Marine Hospital report, he was listed as "Chief" in the Department of Medicine, Certified Specialist in Medicine. He died in 1984. "Roy Sutherland" was born in Holland Twp., Grey County, where his family farmed for many years. He was a graduate of the O.S.C.V.I. in Owen Sound before he went on to his medical studies. Another source, a book about Holland Twp., provides different dates concerning his medical training: Dr. Leroy J. Sutherland was born in 1900 in Holland Twp., Grey County, and attended high school in Owen Sound. He was born on the 8th Line of Holland Twp., Grey County on Jan. 29, 1900. His parents were..... He lived at 854 1st Ave. West, Owen Sound, and was at the Lee Manor retirement home shortly before he died at the General & Marine Hospital. He had broken his neck three times, and was having difficulty moving around. He is buried at Greenwood Cemetery, in Owen Sound. |
