Hamilton Bros. (Holland Centre) |
Details |
Hamilton's Mill at Holland Centre, Grey County, was listed as "Hamilton Bros." in a 1903 directory. At the same time, there was a Mitchell Bros. sawmill, a R. Olmstead & Son sawmill, and a T. & R. Orr sawmill at Holland Centre. Sawmilling was mostly done in the winter-time, and lots of horse teams hauling sleigh loads of logs would travel to Holland Centre for sawing. A wood and lumber office owned and operated by Frank and Jack Hamilton was built at Lots 16-17, Concession 1, WTSR (West of the Toronto Sydenham Road) in Holland Township. William Hamilton had started a sawmill circa 1850 at Lot 36, Concession 2 NETSR in Holland Township. About a thousand acres were owned by various Hamiltons, and there was a bush on each farm. Local farmers also brought their logs to Hamilton Bros. It was a busy place. Adam Hillis purchased the mill from the Hamiltons in 1953. Mr. Duggan took it over in 1954, but Hurricane Hazel that year was such a strong storm that it tore out the dam, destroying the source of water power for the mill. Soon after, the mill was torn down, and some of it was used by Mr. Phillips to build a shed. Some of the mill machinery was purchased by Mr. Hallman of Walter's Falls to use at his business. -- - - - THE PATHS THAT LED TO HOLLAND: A HISTORY OF HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, pp. 145 and 175. |
