The Grey Regiment |
Details |
The Grey Regiment was formed on ______, 1920. Many of the local officers who had participated in the 31st Grey Regiment prior to the First World War had been killed during the conflict, so there was a need for a re-organization. The Grey Regiment was first commanded by Lt. Colonel G. D. Fleming of Owen Sound. In 1924, he was succeeded by Lt. Col. H. E. Pembroke. "This change in command made it possible for Colonel Fleming to give active leadership to getting the Northern Brigade established and functioning as a Formation. This was not a small assignment as two of the four Regiments were only set up on paper and even that much was not nearly completed. However, by persevering, the other two units, the Northern Pioneers from Parry Sound and Muskoka area and the Algonquin Regiment from Northern Ontario, chiefly north of North Bay were completed and recruited to authorized training strength. This effort was finalized in 1926 when Lt. Col. Lawlor of Huntsville commanded the Northern Pioneers and Lt. Col. Lang M.P. commanded the Algonquin Regiment." Fleming is included (p. 24). The insignia for the Grey Regiment was designed by a First World War veteran, Alfred Raper of Meaford. In June, 1921, the Greys went to Niagara-on-the-Lake for their first post-war annual training camp. In 1922, Camp Sarawak was used. In 1925, the regiment camped at Leith In 1926, the training was at Camp Sarawak. In 1931, financial constraints meant that no large camp occurred, but it was re-instated in 1932. In 1933 the camp was held at Victoria Park in Owen Sound, and it was held there again in 1934. In 1935, the camp was held at Huntsville. In 1936, the camp was held at Penetanguishene. The name ceased on Dec. 15, 1936, when the Grey Regiment amalgamated with The Simcoe Foresters, and thereby created the Grey & Simcoe Foresters Regiment.
