Provenance |
Kate Andrew was born in Owen Sound, Grey County, in 1872, the only daughter of Captain James Andrew and Sarah Andrew (nee McKechnie). She died in 1971. In 1960, Kate told museum staff that this image shows her uncle, John Andrew, who was born or from Castleton, in Northern Scotland. He lived at Picton in Canada, and in 1844, came to Owen Sound, Upper Canada. He worked as a storekeeper, and might have worked at Melville's store at Chatsworth (known as Johntown in the early days). The image was framed at some point at the John James photography studio of Owen Sound, Grey County, as it has a sticker from that business on the back. J. James did not come to Owen Sound until 1905, and the sticker looks 1920s so the image might be an enlarged copy of an older image? |
