Description |
This Holland Township gold-plated medal has a circle centrally with a design depicting a rifleman shooting from a ground position, four radiating arms and a bar. The medal was engraved to personalize it. The top of vertical shaft of the cross has "Great War Duty" and the lower bottom shaft has "Nobly Done" engraved. The left horizontal arm has "1914" and the right arm has "1918" engraved. |
Provenance |
The Township of Holland in Grey County, presented each veteran returning from the Great War with a gold-plated medal like this one. This one was received by the previous owner, Private Joseph Andrew Gawley of the 4th C.M.R. [Canadian Mounted Rifles]. His regimental number was #838512. In 1915, he was a member of the 147th Grey (Overseas) Battalion, which was raised in Owen Sound. Overseas, the 147th was disbanded and the men used as reinforcements for other units. |
