Description |
Cement lily pond fountain statue of Flora (a young girl) with her right arm upraised (from which water fell), and holding a bird in her left hand. She is wearing a floral wreath on her head and has shoulder length hair. Her left foot is raised. Roses and floral motifs are cast at the bottom. The figure (a) is situated upon an octagonal cast metal piece that has three cast frogs attached to it. The fourth frog is missing. The figure has a mended shoulder and the left arm is broken off at the elbow. No cast lettering on the underside of the base. |

Installed/built by or for David Martins Butchart (1862-1947) at his showplace flower gardens at "The Martins," in Balmy Beach, Sarawak Township (on the western shore of Owen Sound Bay),Grey County. It was sometimes referred to as "Butchart's Garden," and it was often visited by local people and tourists, and was featured on postcards. The item was passed down to his daughter Florence (m. Walter Legate), and then to Mr. Kim Legate. David Martins Butchart came from a prominent Owen Sound family who were involved in the Butchart's hardware store in the 19th-century. He and his brother, Robert Pim Butchart, also had developed the Shallow Lake cement works industry. His obituary stated that he had started his garden project 36 years previously (c. 1911) and added features to it over the years. The fountain was found at The Martins site at Balmy Beach, in its original location and had been crated up (outside) for many years. This half of the property was sold in 2017 and the fountain was brought to the Grey Roots Museum on June 29, 2017. |
