Description |
Red and white signature quilt / name quilt, with a title block reading: "Methodist Church / Holland Centre / 1905 / Ladies Aid Society" in ornate, red embroidery. The item is made of white cotton and red cotton fabric. It has a repeated stepped motif (perhaps a temple motif) in red. In between each stepped motif is a 5 cm x 5.8 cm red rectangular piece. The white binding is machine-stitched in white. On the white around the red areas, there are hand-inked names. Some of the names are written straight, while others are written on a slant. The names of several Reverends are included; the other people are members of the congregation or of the local community. There are forty-four blocks with names embroidered on them and block 20, 21, 28 and 29 have" Methodist church Holland Centre 1903 Ladies Aid Society" embroidered on them. Block order goes length-wise, because the names are horizontal in order to be legible. There are 3 images per block, due to difficulty getting all the names into the photo. Block 1: Mr. Jas. Makers mark |
Embroidered in red: "Methodist Church / Holland Centre / 1905 / Ladies Aid Society" (the "5" in 1905 is somewhat indistinct) |
Provenance |
Made in 1905 by the Ladies Aid Society group of the Methodist Church in Holland Center, Grey County. In January of that year, the congregation decided to raise money to help finance the building of a new Methodist Church building, which was dedicated on December 10, 1905 (the Methodist Church would eventually become the Holland Centre United Church). William Hampton won this item when it was raffled off in 1905, and gave it to relatives who later moved out west. It was last owned by Sharon Bohdan of Calgary. |
