Description |
Woman's shiny, black-beaded evening-wear shawl. The beads are very shiny and tubular, and there is a large area of beaded diamond mesh. There is a beaded fringe. There is a frayed, silky lining, and a black corded Bengaline fabric beneath the floral beadwork patterns. It has hook and eye fasteners. |

Manufacturer unknown. Likely dates to the early 20th-century. Belonged to Zelpha L. Matches (née Cox). The Matches family came to Canada from the Orkney Islands, and a James S. Matches originally settled in Middlesex County. He was married to Eliza Rusk. One of their sons, John Matches, was killed in the First World War. James E. Matches was also one of their sons, and was born in July of 1895, in Amabel Township. He married Zelpha L. Cox in 1918, in Shallow Lake. They operated a general store for approximately two years, before farming Lot 3, on Concession 5, Keppel Township, for more than forty years. James Matches was elected to Keppel's Council in 1939, served as Deputy-Reeve from 1944-1947, as Reeve from 1948-1958, and was elected Warden in 1958. He belonged to the Burns Masonic Lodge, and served as a Director of the Federation of Agriculture. Their daughter, Audrey Isabell Matches, was born on November 5, 1929. She trained as a nurse at the Owen Sound General and Marine Hospital, and graduated in 1951. She did post-graduate work in British Columbia. She worked for a long time at the General and Marine Hospital, and subsequently at the Grey Bruce Regional Health Centre. Her brother, F/S Alvin J. Matches, was killed during the Second World War, on August 8, 1942, when he was with the R.C.A.F. and his aircraft was lost over the North Sea. He was twenty years old. His father died in July of 1963. Audrey Matches was an Operating Room nurse, and retired in 1988. She died on August 15, 2010. The Matches family burials are in Hillcrest Cemetery, in Tara, Bruce County. This item last belonged to Audrey Isabell Matches. It was a part of her estate. |
