Provenance |
Manufactured by the Charles Wesley Bowler Brickyard in Cheeseville, Grey County. Cheeseville is located near Markdale, Grey County (about one mile north-east of the village). According to p. 281 of "SPLIT RAIL COUNTRY: A HISTORY OF ARTEMESIA TOWNSHIP", in 1986, William Bowler had a brick kiln on his farm on the east back line of Artemesia, Grey County, which was erected in 1868 and continued until 1915. Thomas Mathews (1837-1935), who arrived in Cornabuss (Markdale) in 1864 to set up a harness-making shop, built the first brick house in Markdale that same year using Bowler bricks. This house would later be situated next to the Markdale library building: the latter would also be made of Bowler bricks, albeit from the company's last run, in 1914. In 1988, both of these brick buildings were still standing. This item was last owned by Gary Karn, of Sauble Beach. |
