Description |
A 19th-century gouge chisel. It is a cast steel item, with a tapered and marred wooden grip, that is incised with "J. L". The blade was made in Sheffield, England, and there is a rectangular JAMES CAM / SHEFFIELD stamped mark on the top side of the tang area, and CAST STEEL on the underside. |

Provenance |
Manufactured by James Cam's edged tool factory in Sheffield, England. The item was used by and personalized by "J. L." (John Lang, a Meaford area carpenter and builder who built a number of structures there c. 1868+ and also the Lang Block). After 1899, it was inherited by his son, William James Lang, a carpenter who lived in Meaford, Grey County for almost his entire life. After 1957, the item was collected by F. Stanley Knight of Meaford. After 1964, it was owned by the Stanley Knight Heritage Society. |
