Description |
signature quilt / name quilt, made of red embroidery on white cotton, with white, machine-stitched thread. Although it is pieced together, it is not quilted. The plain white binding is 1.2-1.3 cm wide. The title block area is 54 cm wide and has "S S No 8 Derby" above a cross outline, with a double column of red-embroidered names. The other blocks are approximately 27 cm x 28 cm, with four rectangular corner blocks with embroidered maple leaf motifs. When observed closely, the pencil lines which helped the embroiderer keep the name lines straight are visible on the blocks. The blocks have a central name, with four names arranged on angles around it. Block 2: Myrtle Barclay, W. McCullough, Isabel Couper, Mabel Barclay, Mr. D. Moore. Block 3: Mrs. R. Atchison, A. Embroidered in the title block: "S S No 8 Derby" above a cross outline, with a double column of names in red embroidery below |
Provenance |
Made by the Red Cross, at S.S.#8 Derby School. Dates to between 1914 and 1918. Donations given during this item's creation went to the Red Cross. It likely belonged to Jean Wardell (née Marshall), the daughter of Mrs. W. H. Marshall. Her name appears twice in the item's embroidery. It later belonged to her daughter-in-law, Olive Wardell. Many students whose names appear on the item returned to their school for a 1965 reunion. This item last belonged to Isabel Hewitson of Owen Sound, Grey County. She also owned the North Derby Tweedsmuir Book which contained the work of Evelyn Hewitson, from which the information about S.S.#8 Derby School was obtained. |

Function |
During the First World War, Red Cross groups made various articles, including quilts, to help the war effort. Name quilts were often subscribed to, at ten cents a name, and then auctioned or raffled off to raise funds for the Red Cross. This quilt was made in the former Derby Township, Grey County by the S. S. #8 Derby School Red Cross. A light bedspread like this was very suitable for use in the summer months. |
