Description |
Cast cement "Portland Cement Company" figural toothpick or match holder. It advertises "Samson Brand" cement. "OWEN SOUND" is at the left of the base, and "SHALLOW LAKE, ONT." is on the right. It depicts two cement barrels on top of a pile of cement bags, and Samson fighting a lion. The lettering: "SAMSON BRAND" is near their feet. The left barrel is open, and can hold items. "1895" is pencilled on its underside. The item was given a dull gold paint finish, but was likely bare when it was new. |

Manufacturer unknown. Dates to circa 1895. Made for/by the Owen Sound and Shallow Lake Portland Cement Company. The cement industry was once very important in Owen Sound, Shallow Lake, and Durham. This item was last owned by June Shouldice of Shallow Lake, Grey County. |
