Description |
CAPO "Cedar Oil" corked glass bottle. This colorless pressed glass bottle takes a cork stopper. Item has an elliptical base which appears to be pushed up inside. There is a diamond-D mark, along with an "8". The fluid was still in the bottle when it arrived at the museum. It was a bright, clear jewel-red colour. The bottle is smooth-shouldered and has a tall neck. Affixed is an orange/black/white, vertically rectangular printed paper. It has "CAPO" (registered trademark) on it in a horizontal diamond shape. "Cedar Oil" / CLEANS/ AS IT / POLISHES/ FLOORS/ AUTOS,/ FURNITURE / WOODWORK, ETC. / USE ON MOPS FOR FLOORS" -"DIRECTIONS/ APPLY SMALL QUANTITY OF CEDAR/ OIL TO A CLOTH PREVIOUSLY DAMPENED WITH WATER. RUB SURFACE UNTIL CLEAN. THEN POLISH WITH/ A DRY CLOTH." / MANUFACTURED BY / THE CAPO POLISHES LTD. / HAMILTON. CANADA". |

Printed label has "MANUFACTURED BY/THE CAPO POLISHES LTD./ HAMILTON. CANADA" as well as the horizontal diamond-shaped CAPO registered trademark. The glass factory mark is a D in a diamond (Dominion Glass", and has an 8 at the right side. |

Manufactured by Capo Polishes Ltd of Hamilton, Ontario. Likely 20th-century. Belonged to the Toms family, who originally lived in Bognor, Sydenham Township, Grey County. Cecil Toms arrived in Owen Sound in the 1920s, where he owned an automotive garage and sales business. The family also farmed at Branningham Grove, a farm east of Owen Sound in Sydenham Township. Last owned by his son, Dave Toms of Owen Sound. |
