Leather horse whip, formerly used by firefighters at Owen Sound when the fire department had horse-drawn fire wagons in service. |
Provenance |
Unknown. "Used at the fire hall (Owen Sound) when the horse drawn wagon was in use." Last owned by Gilbert Rice of Owen Sound, Grey County, who grew up in Massie, Holland Township, Grey County, where his father had a blacksmith and woodworking shop for many years. Gilbert became a firefighter and served with the Owen Sound Fire Department for 32 years. The OSFD used horses up until 1939. In 1917, there were horses and a Studebaker truck used. Over the years there were both horses and motorized vehicles employed, with the last fire horse retired in 1939. |
