Description |
J. R. BURNS stoneware butter crock. It has a blueish, hand-painted motif of a flower on its side. It is stamped with marks reading "J R BURNS TORONTO" and "2" (= two-gallon capacity). It has cylindrical walls, and two lift handles. It has a deep, intentional groove around its whole circumference, just beneath the lip. |

Provenance |
Manufactured by the J. R. Burns pottery of Toronto. Dates from between 1881 and 1887, the years in which the company was operational. Likely belonged to Robert and Ethel Winch, who lived on a farm on RR#1 Chatsworth (south of Williamsford), in Holland Township, Grey County. It was last owned by the family of Walter and Mary Winch, who moved to 734, 9th Street A. East, Owen Sound, Grey County. It was found among other items in their Estate. |
