Description |
Militia insignia piece, likely a cap badge. The stamped brass badge (a) has a coppertone finish or patina on the observe side and a brass split pin fastener (b) on the reverse side. No maker's mark observed. The County Crest on the badge includes a crowned lion guardant at the left and a leonine or tiger figure at the right. The bottom banner area bears the words: "DE BON VOULOIR SERVIR LE ROY" spread out on three banners, with "31" in the center. There is a scaling ladder motif at the very top. |

The item is likely a cap badge (it would have had two matching collar badges as well). The split pin fastener made it easy to remove the badge for cleaning purposes. Some of the design is derived from the heraldic symbols used by the Earl of Grey's family crest. |
