Description |
First World War German helmet. This is a pickelhaube, a dark boiled leather helmet, that has a brass top spike. There is also a flexible brass chinstrap. The helmet plate has an ornate eagle design. There is a decorative, ridged red area where the chinstrap attaches to the sides of the helmet. There is a buckled leather strap. The visor area is very short, with a brass edge to it. The interior has a ridged brown cloth lining. |

Collected by John Davy - probably as a war-time souvenir brought back to Canada when he served with the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles regiment during the First World War. He was wounded during his service with the 4th C.M.R. and returned to Owen Sound. He had initially enlisted with the 147th Grey (Overseas) Battalion. Subsequently owned by his wife, Harriet Davy (née Cass). |
