A rectangular, two-piece wooden pencil box (a) with a sliding removable lid (b), that is personalized with "J. W. McKAY" in pencil printing. No decor, just a thumbnail groove, and some pencil graffiti and ink stains. Three elliptical compartments within. |
Provenance |
Belonged to/used by J. W. McKay (=James Wesley McKay, b. Dec. 31, 1895. He and his siblings attended S.S.#13 (the Leith School). The Hugh and Jeanette (Jane) McKay family farmed in the Annan/Leith area of Sydenham Township, Grey County. The McKay family farm was located about one mile north of Leith, at Lot 28, Concession A. His brother, Donald Gordon (Doug) McKay, and his wife Olive (née Beattie), also farmed there in Sydenham Township, until 1940, when they moved to Derby Township to another farm (Lot 9, along Highway 21). The item was last kept by their daughter, Donna McKay-Mills of Owen Sound, Grey County. J. Wesley McKay (d. 1973) was one of her uncles. |
