Description |
This is a dark brown, wooden, pedestal-based, cup-like sugar bowl with a lid (a&b). It is made out of a cocoanut shell, butternut wood, and bone. The finished cup / bowl has some turning in its shaping. The interior has a mottled appearance. The fitted lid has an inset bone lift knob. Telford did not mark his name onto the piece. |

The Victorian sugar bowl was hand-made by Mr. Wm. P. Telford of Annan, in the 19th-century. Mr. Telford was born in 1797 and died in 1879. He did a lot of woodworking. The Henry and Helen Rixon family of Leith, Sydenham Township, Grey County, owned the sugar bowl, and brought it to Owen Sound, Grey County in the 1880s when they moved from Leith. They also retained a summer home at Leith for a long time. Mrs. Helen (neé Ainslie) Rixon died in 1913, and Mr. Henry Rixon died in 1920. |
