Description |
An First-Nations made basket (a) with lid (b) that may have been used as a clothes hamper. The lid has a small handle and the basket is decorated with a green-dyed band. The basket has a bit of a lean to it. There are two wider bands of splints at the sides, which contrast slightly with the other ones. The lid loosely fits on the top. |

Provenance |
Likely first owned by Daniel W. Proctor, formerly of Walkerton (Bruce County) who used to travel to Georgian Bay areas in the course of his work in conjunction with the Keenan Bros. sawmill industry of Owen Sound, Grey County, around 1920. He was a lumber dealer for the firm, and knew some First Nations people. There were also First Nations basket peddlars who visited Owen Sound and area from the Cape Croker and Saugeen reserves in the early 20th-century, so that is another potential source for this basket. Last owned at Owen Sound by his grand-daughter, Helen Evans (nee Hindman). Last owned by his maternal grand-daughter, Helen Evans (neé Hindman), who formerly lived in Owen Sound and Sarnia. |
