Description |
A carved, wooden "Indian War Club" that was presented to/given to the late John McLean by Chief Waubyuk of Orillia in the 19th-century. The war club head is effigy-style, shaped like a male's head, with inset lead eyes, and is dull red [perhaps ochre?] and black in colour. |
Provenance |
This is likely an Ojibwa artefact? It is difficult to confirm the spelling, but the last owner, Mary McLean, told the museum staff in 1961 that this item had been given to her father, John A. McLean of Owen Sound, by a Chief Waubyuk of Orillia. Mr. McLean collected items of interest to him. Mary McLean was born in 1878 and died in 1967. She was born at Owen Sound, Ontario. Her father was John McLean [1816-1900] and her mother was Elizabeth Blyth(e), who married Mr. McLean at Owen Sound, Canada West, in 1863. The McLeans lived on the east hill area of Owen Sound, at 37 High St. (later called 1663 5th Ave. East). Mr. McLean was a native of Scotland. |
