Description |
A letterpress printer's printing block, rectangular, with a copper surface with reversed lettering for "Markdale Footwear". It is mounted on wood to make it type-high. There is a hard-to-read impressed maker's mark. |
Makers mark |
One long side is impressed with two marks, but they are not easy to read. The one at the right looks like it starts with a script-style M or N, with a flourish, and several letters. |
Provenance |
Unknown maker (likely made in Ontario?). Used by the Markdale Standard Newspaper printing office in the Village of Markdale, Grey County. The Markdale Footwear industry began in 1947. See pp. 278-279 of MARKDALE: CROSSROADS OF GREY for more information. At an unknown date, prior to 2005, the item was given to the Beavercrest Community School at Markdale. |

Function |
The village of Markdale had a footwear manufacturing company start there in 1947. This item was formerly kept and used by The Markdale Standard newspaper office. They did not make it themselves, but ordered it from a business that made printing blocks. It could be re-used whenever an advertisement for the footwear company needed to run in the newspaper. It is a letterpress printing item. It would be locked up in a chase, perhaps with an illustration block and text, to form an advertisement. The chase would then be taken to a newspaper press to make impressions (print on paper). |
