Provenance |
Manufacturer unknown. Dates to the 20th-century. Belonged to William Humphrey Taylor. He was one of the sons of William Taylor, who had started a bottling company in Owen Sound, Grey County in 1884. In 1886, William Taylor had partnered with John C. Pringle to form the Taylor and Pringle company. Their products were transported by horse and wagon, or by schooner up to the Manitoulin Island lumber camps. According to the 1892 Rutherford's Directory of Owen Sound, Taylor and Pringle manufactured "Belfast Ginger Ale" at the Belfast Ginger Ale Works. The factory was located at 156, Boyd Street. William Taylor and his family resided at 158, Boyd Street, and John Pringle's family resided at 141, Boyd Street. According to page 117 of Melba Croft's "Growth of a County Town", in 1909, Taylor and Pringle were Owen Sound's sole Coca-Cola retailers. John Pringle died in 1911, and William Taylor created William Taylor and Son Limited on April 19, 1917. After his death and that of his son, Christopher, in January and May of 1925, his business was managed by Clara Taylor and her son, Humphrey Taylor (born 1909). The company's first Orange Quench pop bottles were registered in May of 1931. Upon Clara's death in 1956, Humphrey Taylor became Manager. The two-storey brick factory was located at 957 4th Ave. East. The company name changed to Taylor Soft Drinks c. 1960. The firm was sold in 1971. Last owned by Nora Helen Taylor, a daughter of William Humphrey Taylor. |
