A marine engineer's overalls. The off-white fabric (patterned cotton weave?) has UPPER LAKES / SHIPPING CO. LTD. in black machine-made embroidery on the back shoulder area. There is a navy blue collar and waist band and cuffs. There were five UNION MADE silvertone metal fasteners (the top one is broken now). There are front and back pockets. The front of the overalls has a machine-embroiderd red and black company pennant logo on the man's left chest area. The woven maker's label has SANFORDIZED / UNION MADE IN CANADA / UNIFORM SUPPLY CO. LTD." There is also a size label with "42L". |

Owned by/worn by Joseph Ellis Davidson of the Kemble area of Grey County, when he was a sailor on the Great Lakes. He started sailing on April 4, 1949, as a Fireman (Stoker), and became a 4th Class Marine Engineer. He stopped sailing in 1965. The item was last owned by one of his sons, Craig Davidson. |

A protective overall garment, formerly worn by a Great Lakes 4th Class Marine Engineer prior to 1965. It has large pockets, that look handy for holding small tools. The emblem on the front identifies the lake freighter shipping company he worked for, as did the lettering embroidered on the back side. |
