Description |
31st Grey Regiment scarlet military patrol jacket made of wool with black (or very dark navy-blue) and white trim and seven brass buttons with crowns on each. There is an exterior pocket on each breast, with its flap secured by a brass button. The buttons are convex and have CANADA above the crown. There are shoulder straps that are black wool with white cord edging. Each shoulder strap is secured with a brass CANADA button. There is a black wool collar with a white cord edging defining it from the scarlet. The sleeves have black cuffs and applied white braid in the Crowsfoot pattern. The interior has some brown linen. There is also a white-painted stencil on the red (near the bottom): "5 F. 7. S / 40 / 35". The lining is a coarser, cream-coloured fabric that has faint black stencilling: "N0 5 C0 / 31ST / REGT". When the tunic is opened up, there is tongue-shaped black leather tab that has the manufacturer's name printed in an oval mark. It is hard to read it now, but it looks like the W. E. Sandford Wholesale Clothiers company of Hamilton, Ont. |

Printed in an oval-shaped mark, but very hard to read: W. E. Sandford Mfg. Co Wholesale Clothiers 1901 Made in Hamilton |
Provenance |
This militia tunic / patrol jacket was manufactured by the W. E. Sandford Mfg. Co. (Wholesale Clothiers) industry at Hamilton, Ontario and apparently has their 1901 pattern. It belonged to a member of the 31st Grey Regiment of Grey County, Ontario. This fellow belonged to the No. 5 company of the regiment. The No. 5 group was based in Owen Sound. In 1977, this tunic was already in the collection of the County of Grey-Owen Sound Museum, but the students then cataloguing it did not see a number with it, so they assigned it with this one. Viola Bothwell, the Registrar, wondered if perhaps it had come in with the George Wakeford collection of 1967.027...? Captain Wakeford collected and was keen about local militia memorabilia. |
