Provenance |
Stitched by the Red Cross Workers at the Peabody School in the former Sullivan Township, Grey County, and completed on November 23, 1917. There are 231 names recorded on it, including 29 local soldiers. Quilts like this were often made by various groups during 1914-1918 to raise money for the war effort. A fee of ___ cents was charged to anyone who wished to have his or her name to appear on them. Each finished quilt would be then auctioned in order to raise even more funds. Belonged to the MacDonald family and then to Donelda McClure. |

Function |
A name quilt, sometimes called a "signature quilt" or "autograph quilt", may not be everyone’s ideal of what should decorate a bed, as they are often red and white and patriotic (or church-related) in nature, and cluttered with embroidered names. However, it cannot be denied that they are enduring textile records of ordinary people who wished to help out a good cause. |
