Description |
One dark brown wooden chain whimsey consisting of 17 oval shaped, bisected rings (bisected across middle of each) that intersect. Both ends culminate in a crucifix with a loop attached to the top. This is an ornamental wooden chain whimsey. This is one of four in this accession made by him (see RELATED). |

This item was made by Captain J.G. Ainslie, c. 1890 using his pen knife at Leith, Sydenham Township, Grey County. Captain Ainslie was born in 1858, and died in 1923. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Ainslie. "Ainslie Wood" is a placename that recalls this family. It is near the shoreline of Owen Sound bay in the former township of Sydenham. Last owned by Eleanor Rixon (John G. Ainslie's niece) who resided at Owen Sound, Ontario, but also spent summers in Leith, as that is where her parents and grandparents had formerly resided, and where the Rixons kept a summer home. Miss Rixon's maternal grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. Adam Ainslie. |
