Description |
12 hand-made maple wood (perhaps ash and pine too) egg cups and their tiered display stand. Woodenware items like this are also sometimes called treenware items. 13 pieces in total (a through m). This set was made by George Stephens of Desboro, Ontario, circa 1900. STAND: Made on a wood-turning lathe. The round base is attached to a round, wooden section, 4 cm high, that holds the spindle vertically. A cylindrically-shaped two-piece spindle has a tenon end that fits into a hole on the lower spindle top for assembly. The upper spindle measures 21.5 cm in length, while the lower spindle part is 13.5 cm in length. The round platform is 12.6 cm in diameter and 1.5 cm thick. It is cut-out in the center to fit horizontally between the upper and lower spindles. There is another round platform, 16 cm in diameter and 1.5 cm thick, which is also cut-out in the center to fit horizontally between the lower spindle end and the round wooden section above the base. The platforms are sawed-out and hand-smoothed. Six hardwood pegs are interspaced evenly around the circumference of each platform. The pegs are about 2.5 x 0.3 cm. The stand has a varnished finish. 12 EGG CUPS: Made on a wood-turning lathe. Made from maple wood. Are approximately the same shape and dimension. Have a hollowed-out bowl with a depth of 3.7 cm. Have a turned pedestal-style base. Overall they are 6.7 cm in height. A small hole cut in the center of each base allows each egg cup to sit on the platform pegs. Varnished finish. |
